Site Update Complete

Site Fix

Though fixing the maps was the primary improvement you'll notice as a user, the site has undergone a major update.  Security was the primary focus, but functionality was improved as well.  As with any major update, there is a chance unforseen errors will come from this.  If you see any *new* problems, please send us a message to let us know.  Thanks to everyone for your help and patience in building this amazing community!

Cinderella Trail Run 10K

A Newbie’s First Trail Race

 By Barefoot Terry

August 14, 2010 - It was a cool, misty, wet morning in the hills above Oakland, California.  Costal Trail Runs was putting on a 10K, half marathon, marathon, and 50K ultra.  The drive to Joaquin Miller Park had been without traffic (a rarity for the San Francisco Bay Area), and I arrived earlier than expected.  I walked down to the registration area in my VFFs, got my number, hit the restrooms, and then wandered back to my truck to get out of the chill morning air.  The temperature was about 56 degrees.  Not terribly cold, but enough to chill someone in running shorts.

Being an Eagle Scout, I consider myself fairly well versed on hiking trails, but this Saturday, I dared to try something new - a trail run.  Not only that, I decided to run it barefoot.

The Birth of the Hybrid Runner

By Barefoot Ramzev

Let me start by saying that I don’t blog.  I do not believe myself to be a writer that people will actually “follow” to see what I write next.  What will follow these few sentences is just a rambling of my thoughts and OPINIONS on what we call barefoot running.

Feeling great after 100 miles in the Rockies.

My fourth summer in a row visit to Leadville, Colorado and my third completion of the Leadville 100 Mile Trail Race...what an experience.  Deep gratitude for good friends and a strong body.

A First 5K, Barefoot

By Cali Girl

Well, I did it! I met my goal of finishing a 5k this year. Getting healthier was a promise I made to my mom, who passed away of a massive heart attack last year at the age of 59, so this was sort of big for me even though I didn't do it extremely well with a time of 37:20.  But... I still feel completely accomplished!

The Changing of the Guard:

A Sociological Analysis of the Barefoot and Minimalist Shoe Movement

By Jason Robillard

Human behavior fascinates me.  Human behavior in relation to barefoot and minimalist shoe running fascinates me even more.  I have been in a position to observe the progression of this phenomenon for a number of years.  The entire movement can be framed within the context of the sociological/anthropological concept of the diffusion of innovations

The concept outlines the progression of any given innovation within a society.  It is somewhat odd to consider barefoot (BFR) and minimalist shoe running (MR) as an "innovation", but it does represent a significant change in our society's collective thoughts on running.  After all, we ran barefoot or in minimalist shoes for tens of thousands of years.  The modern running shoe has been around for thirty.

2010 Burning River 100 Mile Endurance Run Race Report

I used to be a normal guy. I liked watching TV. I exercised in moderation. I ran in the same attire other runners utilized. I wore shoes. Then I caught the ultramarathon bug. Shortly after, I also caught the barefoot running bug. The last five years of my life have been spent learning how to intertwine these two passions. For the last five years, I have been working towards a goal of running a 100 mile race without shoes. Completely barefoot.
